Recognising and Supporting Autistic Girls in Early Years
Overview
Autistic girls continue to be under-identified and under-supported, particularly during the Early Years. Many girls do not fit traditional expectations of autism and may appear sociable, compliant, imaginative and settled while experiencing significant hidden effort, anxiety or overwhelm.
This practical and neuro-affirming training explores how autistic girls may present in nursery and reception settings, why their needs can be overlooked, and what practitioners can do to provide meaningful support before difficulties escalate.
Using real-life examples, reflective discussion and the story of a fictional child, Sophie, participants will be guided through the process of observation, understanding and support, helping them recognise less obvious presentations and develop confidence in responding to children’s needs.
